Cathedral Roof and Renovation, Siakago

About the Project

St. Peter's Cathedral, Siakago — the mother church of the ACK Diocese of Mbeere — underwent a major programme of renovation and refurbishment in 2023, ahead of the Diocese's 25th anniversary celebrations.

The Cathedral, which has served as the centre of diocesan life since the Diocese was carved out of the Diocese of Embu on 1 July 1997, had developed significant maintenance needs over its years of active use. The renovation addressed these comprehensively.

Works Completed

Roof Complete replacement of the cathedral roof — including rafters, purlins, and roof sheeting — with new long-span iron sheets and improved guttering. The previous roof had developed leaks in multiple locations affecting the interior during heavy rain.

Electrical System Full rewiring of the cathedral's electrical system, including new distribution boards, LED lighting throughout the nave, chancel, and vestry areas, and external security lighting.

Internal Fittings Repainting of the interior walls and ceiling; refurbishment of the pews; repairs to the chancel floor; and replacement of the altar rail and lectern.

External Works Repainting of the exterior, repair of the perimeter fence, and improvements to the approach path and parking area.

Significance

The renovation was completed in time for the 25th anniversary celebrations of the Diocese in 2022, allowing the Cathedral to host the commemorative services in a refreshed and fully functional state. The Cathedral is the seat of Bishop Rt. Rev. Prof. Moses Masamba Nthukah and the venue for the Diocese's principal services including ordinations, confirmations, and synods.
