Mayori Rainwater Harvesting Initiative
Installation of 10,000-litre ferrocement rainwater harvesting tanks at 8 parish centres and schools across Mayori Archdeaconry.
About the Project
Mayori Archdeaconry sits in one of the drier zones of Embu County. While annual rainfall does occur, communities have historically lacked the infrastructure to capture and store it — meaning that even when rain falls, much of it is lost to runoff. Parish centres and schools are left dependent on distant water sources for most of the year.
The Mayori Rainwater Harvesting Initiative will install ferrocement rainwater tanks at 8 parish centres and schools across the archdeaconry, enabling each site to capture and store rainwater from roof surfaces for use during dry periods.
Technology Used
Ferrocement Tanks Each tank holds 10,000 litres and is constructed using ferrocement — a durable, low-cost construction method using wire mesh and cement mortar. Ferrocement tanks are well-suited to the local climate, are long-lasting (20+ years with basic maintenance), and can be built using local labour.
Guttering and First-Flush Diverters Each installation includes roof guttering, downpipes, and a first-flush diverter — a simple device that discards the first flow of water in a rain event (which may carry dust and debris from the roof) before allowing clean water into the storage tank.
Sites
Tanks will be installed at 8 parish centres and schools across the Mayori Archdeaconry, with sites selected on the basis of catchment area, congregation size, and existing infrastructure.
